The 2025 DeVane Lectures approach American history not as a settled patriotic narrative, but as an evolving and often conflictual process of national self-definition. Particularly valuable for Joint Study Group America at 250 is course emphasis on democracy as an unfinished experiment, historical memory as contested terrain, and citizenship as a recurring site of negotiation.
